Current Book of Study: THE NEW HEART OF WISDOM
by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso
- Understanding the relationship between our mind and our world
- A special method for overcoming difficulties in daily life
- Removing obstacles to realizing our full potential
This completely new presentation offers truly liberating insights and advice for the contemporary reader. It reveals the profound meaning of the very heart of Buddha’s teachings – the Perfection of Wisdom Sutras.
The author shows how all our problems and suffering come from our ignorance of the ultimate nature of things, and how we can abandon this ignorance and come to enjoy pure, lasting happiness by developing a special wisdom associated with compassion for all living beings.
Through regular teachings and meditation, systematic reading and study, and discussion, FP offers the same training followed by spiritual practitioners in an unbroken lineage dating back to Buddha Shakyamuni. In this way we can gain authentic experience of Buddhism while maintaining our contemporary lifestyle. By studying on this program we gain great confidence in meditation – from basic techniques for overcoming our everyday problems to practices leading to lasting happiness and inner peace. Warm friendships develop as students inspire each other, sharing insights and experiences of the spiritual path.
How Does the Program Work?
The secret of the Foundation Program’s success lies in the manageable commitment that participants undertake. Students enroll for one section of the book at a time and commit to attending every class, learning the material, and taking a test related to that section.
Once you have some familiarity with Kadampa Buddhism, you can join the program at any time. You may attend a class before making a commitment to Foundation Program.
If you have been attending classes at the center for awhile, you would probably enjoy Foundation Program (FP) Classes. The perfect opportunity to deepen your understanding of Buddha’s teachings and integrate meditation into your daily life. FP is for those who wish to deepen their understanding and experience of Buddhism by engaging in systematic study of five essential Buddhist texts.
Foundation Program gives you the opportunity to engage in a structured study and meditation program on the essential teachings of the Buddhist spiritual path right here in downtown Denver, with Kadam Lucy James, who by chance was the first teacher in the New Kadampa Tradition to teach the Foundation Program! (many years ago).
Buddhism teaches that to find lasting happiness and meaning in our lives we need to follow a spiritual path. To follow this path it is important to have a close connection with a qualified teacher who can give us personal advice and encouragement, to listen to pure Dharma teachings, and to belong to a strong spiritual community.
FP is a tried and tested way to gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of Buddha’s teachings, maintain a daily meditation practice that is both focused and powerful, and make genuine spiritual progress.
There are two classes per week, on Sundays, and students are expected to try to attend both. If you have to miss one, you can do a catch up class at home. Each class includes preparatory practices, guided meditations, teachings, commentary, and discussion.
4:30-6:30 with Prayers for Meditation
(6:30-7:10 Dinner break)
7:10-8:30 with Liberating Prayer
You may start the program anytime and you are welcome to attend two preliminary classes before enrolling.
FP students are also encouraged to come to pujas at the center. To make it easier on people’s schedules, we are now holding Wishfulfilling Jewel at 3pm on Sundays.
Correspondence is available for those who cannot attend classes, please contact the Education Program Coordinator for more information.
