About the Retreat
“All phenomena are the nature of your mind, your mind is the nature of emptiness.”
Gen Samten and Kadam Lucy will be leading a 4-day mountain retreat on the emptiness of the mind May 3-6. Often we feel stuck in painful habits of thought, perceiving our mind to be fixed and unchanging in its negative ways. During this rare and experiential retreat, we can learn how to dispel the clutter of our mind and the complications of our lives through meditating on the true nature of our mind. Abiding in the deep inner peace of this emptiness, there are no disturbing thoughts, no pain, no worry, no anger, no conflict, and no fear.
By meditating on our mind’s conventional nature, clarity, we can experience deeper and deeper levels of peace. Then by meditating on its ultimate nature, its emptiness of existing in a fixed, inherent way, we can quickly break free — uncovering our limitless potential for joyful transformation.

Gen Samten Kelsang is the Resident Teacher at KMC New York and will co-lead the retreat. With 40 years of study and practice of Buddha’s teachings, he presents Buddha’s most profound teachings in a practical and accessible way. As one of Venerable Geshe-la’s senior disciples, Gen Samten has had the unique opportunity to engage in a three-year retreat and carries with him a wealth of experience in skillfully guiding sincere practitioners to profound meditative insights on retreat.
Our main teacher at KMC Colorado is Kadam Lucy James. One of the senior teachers of Kadampa Buddhism, Kadam Lucy has taught extensively in England, Florida, and San Francisco, and helped set up many thriving meditation centers since 1981. She is a leading expert in meditation and is regularly invited to teach courses around the United States and Europe due to her skill in presenting both simple and profound subjects with great clarity. For many years, one of her main jobs was to help with the editing and production of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso’s books, and she has engaged in extensive meditation retreat.
